Gadkari proposes ropeway network for transport

Mumbai: On Monday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari advocated for a vast network of ropeways across the country. Promoting the positive aspect of the proposal, Gadkari said that the cost effective implementation of this project would surely prove to be a “game changer” for the transport system.

The minister added, “If ropeways are introduced, it would not only ensure the flawless amalgamation in a multi-modal transportation system, but it can also be used as a feeder service to the mass rapid transport system. In addition, it will help reduce traffic congestion, thus decreasing number of road mishaps, save fuel, protect environment from pollution, save time.”

He expressed these views while addressing delegates attending a two-day workshop on ‘Development of Ropeways, Sustainable Transport, Seamless Connectivity’. The workshop was organised by the Indian Port Rail Corporation Ltd. (IPRCL), an SPV formed under the Ministry of Shipping with the equity participation of major ports.

Gadkari said that the benefits of implementing ropeways as a transport mode are vast because it will reduce the travel timing, boost tourism as well as employment.

While putting forth his views about infrastructure development for ropeways and presenting a road map for executing the project, Gadkari assured the delegates that all out efforts will be made to overcome challenges coming in the way of executing the projects, including talking to the Niti Ayog and coordinating with multiple ministries.
