CWG 2018: Mary, Solanki grab gold on debut, Manika in TT

Gold Coast : MC Mary Kom (48kg) became the first Indian woman boxer to win a Commonwealth Games gold. Also, Gaurav Solanki (52kg) in the top-finishers’ group after the first set of finals on Saturday.

Amit Panghal (49kg) and Manish Kaushik (60kg) settled for silver in their respective events after losing closely-contested bouts.

Mary Kom grabbed all the attention with the win. It was her debut in Commonwealth Games, also most likely the last. She made it a memorable one with yet another dominating performance to claim an unanimous verdict of 5-0 over Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara in the final.

“I am so glad to have made history again, it is a special feeling to win something that is a milestone medal. I am just so glad,” a beaming Mary Kom said after the victory.

And in the men’s games, Solanki bagged the gold with 4-1 over Northern Ireland’s Brendan Irvine. The Indian lost the third round but did just enough in the first two to walk away with a gold medal on debut at the Games.

Both Amit or Manish had luck on the other side. Amit, who was chasing his third successive international gold, was beaten by England’s European silver-medallist Galal Yafai. Manish lost 2-3 to local favourite Harry Garside. Both the boxers gave their all in the bouts but could not get the judges’ nod.

Indian paddler Manika Batra clinched a gold medal in the women’s singles category at the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Saturday.

Manika outplayed Mengyu Yu of Singapore 4-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-2, 11-7) to clinch the gold medal. This is India’s first ever gold in the women’s singles event at the CWG.
