Ahmedabad: Nine newborns reportedly died at the government-run Civil Hospital at Asarwa locality in Ahmedabad, in 24 hours up to Saturday. Hospital authorities said most of the deaths occurred because the children were underweight and the cases had been refereed from private hospitals.
Five of them had been shifted from Civil Hospitals in Lunawada in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district, Surendranagar district town, Mansa in Gandhinagar district, Viramgam in Ahmedabad district and Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district hospitals in the state, while four were born in the civil hospital.
MM Prabhakar, medical superintendent of civil hospital of Ahmedabad said that the newborns were referred to Ahmedabad in a critical condition and this should not have happened.
He denied the reports that children died due to absence of doctors, he said that all doctors and nurses were on duty at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Government Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, which has 100 beds.
There is no anomaly in medical care facilities in the hospital. I have checked with the head of pediatric department, but no irregularities were reported,” claimed Prabhakar.
