Action will be taken on Food Malls and Multiplex, if food items sold at more than maximum retail printed prices- Ravindra Chavan

Nagpur : The Minister of State for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Shri Ravindra Chavan today informed the Legislative Council that the Government has received complaints of sale of food items at more than maximum retail prices in the food malls and multiplex theaters in the state. If the food items are sold at excess prices, action will be taken under Measurements and Weights Act 2009 and Unpacked Items rules 2011 .

The Leader of the Opposition Shri Dhananjay Munde had tabled a calling attention motion with respect to the sale of food items at excess of the maximum retail prices in the food malls and multiplex theaters in the state. Shri Chavan was replying the said calling attention motion. He stated that Cinema Theaters, Food Malls and Multiplex theaters cannot restrict carrying own food items and water inside the cinema halls, as per section 121 of the Maharashtra Cinema Halls Acat 1966. Besides food items or drinks cannot be sold in the cinema hall during the course of the show. As per the writ petition filed by Shri Jainendra Bakshi ina the High COurt, the High Court has ordered the Home Department to draft the policy for sale of food items at extra rates. Process for the same is in progress.

Inquiry in respect of 44 establishments including theaters and Malls have been conducted during June 2018 Out of which, offences have been registered against three establishments selling food at excess rates than the printed maximum retail prices. The Cinema Halls and Multiplex Owners in the state have been instructed to conduct their business as per rules and not to impose restrictions on anybody or obstruct any customer. Shri Chavan Stated that instructions have been issued to take strict action in case of such complaints found after 1st of August, .
